These freaky-looking characters were some of those parading at the annual Carnival in Lucerne, Switzerland.

For many people of Lucerne Carnival is the most beautiful time of the year. Each time, it starts on Fat Thursday with the Big Bang.

Individuals with fantastic masks and costumes parade along the narrow streets while groups of carnival musicians (“Guggenmusigen”) blow their instruments and thousands of bizarrely clad people dance away the spirits of winter apparently.

Single masked figures slowly make their way along the river Reuss bank enjoying their masquerade.

The carnival runs from February 4 and ends on February 8 – not only in the city of Lucerne but in the entire region surrounding Lake Lucerne.

Luzern’s Carnival dates orient themselves around the century-old Catholic Mardi-Gras. This was set by the Nizäa Easter council for the first Sunday after spring’s full moon.
