Shock as NASA reveals huge asteroid will narrowly miss Earth in 48 hours
NASA boffins have shocked the international community by revealing that a two mile wide doomsday asteroid will be skimming past Earth in 48-hours time.
The Armageddon rock will safely pass Earth on Saturday, but scientists are keeping a close eye on asteroid 86666 (2000 FL10), just in case.
86666 (2000 FL10) is travelling through space at an estimated 40,000 miles per hour and is thought to be between 0.7-1.6 miles wide.
This makes the rock more than 15-times bigger than other asteroids on NASA’s radar.
If it were to hit Earth the asteroid would wipe out life as we know it.
But, despite NASA calling it a 'near-Earth event' 86666 is several million miles away and unlikely to strike our planet..
In response to Qs, asteroid 86666 (2000 FL 10) will safely pass Earth Oct 10 by over 15 million mi/25 million km. It poses zero threat.— Asteroid Watch (@AsteroidWatch) October 8, 2015
