Jack and Emily might top the list of Ireland’s most popular baby names, but new figures released in the UK have revealed the traditional names which are rapidly slipping off the list across the water.

Angela, Derek, Elaine and Roy are amongst the twenty names that are most rapidly declining in the UK, according to figures released by family website BabyCentre.

The figures, derived from the birth records in Britain in 2016, found that Angela, Beverley, Bertram and Cecil are the least popular baby names in Britain this year.

According to Baby Centre’s Managing Editor Sarah Redshaw, the figures were compiled by taking once popular names and investigating how many times they had been registered so far this year.

“It’s inevitable that as some names rise in popularity, others fall out of fashion. The question is will they die out completely, or experience a revival in the future,” she said.
Maureen, Sharon, Dennis and Wayne also placed amongst Britain’s least popular.

Meanwhile new Irish figures released by the CSO found that Ireland’s most popular names have changed drastically since 1916.

In 1911, John was the most popular baby name of the year, with 3,152 babies being christened with the name, followed closely by Patrick and James.

In 2014, Jack, Daniel and Conor featured in the top four, while James still proved popular as 695 children were given the name that year.

Mary, Bridget and Margaret were the most popular girls’ names in 1911, but all three names have dropped off the list in 2014, with Emily, Sophie and Emma topping the charts in 2014.
