A snap of a donkey appearing to smile after being rescued from flood waters in Kerry is going viral.

Animal Heaven Animal Rescue, based in Killorglin in Kerry, got a call from the donkey's owner to say that the animal was in trouble on Sunday after he had escaped from his paddock.

The animal, named Mike after the man who rescued him, was then caught up in the flood waters caused by the storm that battered Ireland over the weekend.

Rescuers used a life buoy to save the donkey's life and when he was brought back to the safety of land he appears to be beaming with happiness.

The picture, which has over 9,000 likes on Facebook, is already proving popular outside Ireland, with a number of UK publications running the image.

Global stardom awaits for Mike!

Hats off to all at Animal Heaven Animal Rescue (and Suzanne Gibbons, the very happy and relieved owner of the rescue in the picture with Mike) for their great work and for bringing a big smile not just to Mike but to the whole country.
