Ooh-la-la! Non-French speaker wins French Scrabble world championships
A man has won the French Scrabble world championship despite not speaking the language.
Nigel Richards defeated his French-speaking competitor in the final in Belgium last Monday, eight weeks after he picked up a French dictionary for the first time to try and learn all of the words.
A friend of Nigel's, who is from Christchurch in New Zealand, said: "He doesn't speak French at all, he just learned the words.
"He won't know what they mean, he wouldn't be able to carry out a conversation in French, I wouldn't think."
