Hospitalised pensioner found to have rusted pistol in her handbag
An antique pistol has been seized from a 95-year-old hospital in-patient who is thought to have hidden the weapon in a handbag.
The gun, which was not loaded or capable of being fired, was found by staff at Walsall Manor Hospital eight days after the pensioner's admission.
A spokeswoman for Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust said: "It is trust policy to check all items on admission to the hospital.
"Unfortunately, it is believed the patient in question had the gun hidden in her handbag at the time these checks were carried out.
"At no point do we believe anyone was at risk. The patient had her wits about her and co-operated fully with the police when they were called."
West Midlands Police confirmed in a statement that officers were called to the hospital at 11.10am on Monday October 5 and had recovered a "rusty handgun which was not loaded and was not functional".
The patient was spoken to by officers but will face no further action after a search of her house was conducted to ensure her safety.
