Horrifying video shows three athletes being run over by bus at European Games in Azerbaijan
A video has emerged showing a bus ploughing into a group of young athletes at the inaugural European Games in Azerbaijan.
Footage obtained by Azerbaijani opposition media channel Meydan TV shows the shuttle bus rounding a turn and running down three Austrian synchronized swimmers, one of whom suffered “severe injuries,” the BBC reports.
The BBC goes on to say that the two athletes who suffered the worst injuries were flown back to Austria on a private jet belonging to Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev. Law-enforcement officials are now investigating the incident, which occurred at 8.30am local time on Thursday as the athletes were walking in the Olympic village.
Vanessa Sahinovic sustained multiple fractures and a head injury – but is not in a life-threatening condition.
Luna Pajer, 15, gained injuries to her arms and has also returned to Vienna for specialist treatment.
Verena Breit, 15, was also injured in the incident and she spent an hour in hospital in Baku with a thigh injury, but has now returned to the athletes’ village.
The Austrian Olympic Committee (AOC) said the team would still compete.
“It’s a very, very sad day,” said Dr Karl Stoss, AOC president. “It’s a tough day for the team. Sporting motives and goals are not important at this moment.”
