Bizarre: Uefa declare final seconds of women’s U19 match must be played in Belfast
UEFA have set a bizarre precedent after a referee’s mistake in the England U19 women’s game against Norway in Belfast.
Norway won the game 2-1, but in the dying moments England were awarded a penalty.
As Leah Williamson stepped up to the spot to stroke the ball home the referee blew the whistle to disallow it for an English player infringing by entering the box before Williamson took it.
Under the rules the referee should instead have allowed the spot-kick to be retaken, but didn’t.
Here, take a look for yourself at the incident
The bizarre scenario now means the game will restart with that penalty in Belfast this evening at 9.45, but not before England play Switzerland and Norway face Northern Ireland in their final qualifier ties.
