Dat’s wife Huynh Thi Trieu says her husband’s condition began in 2004 when he began to suffer from severe nosebleeds.
The virus swept across his face with Dat noticing liquid was running into this nose through a hole in the roof of his mouth whenever he drank.
Surgeons operated on the hole in his mouth, but his condition continued to deteriorate.
Huynh Van Dat before he contracted the disease
Doctors told Dat that he had a nose bridge failure and said that the disease could be tackled, but he could not afford the treatment.
He began to try traditional medicine based on local herbs once his money ran out.
"He was taking traditional medicines but they didn't make any difference, and then he also started to have problems with his eyes which were constantly watering,” said his wife.
"The disease which started with a hole in his nose simply grew and it ate his nose, upper jaw and his eyes. There is no bleeding, but when he could still talk he had told us it was incredibly painful."
Local media have since picked up the story and a team of specialists have visited him promising to ease his suffering.
