Louis Walsh opens up about his mother's battle with Alzheimers
Music mogul Louis Walsh has opened up about his mother's battle with Alzheimer's disease.
The Mayo native (63) revealed his mother Maureen (84) has stayed largely positive and no longer recognises her son.
"My mum has got Alzheimer's now. She doesn't know me. But she's fine, healthy and happy and doesn't know any better," he told Woman Magazine.
The former X Factor judge wouldn't share more details about her condition, but the pair are famously close, with Maureen flying to London and Miami where her son has homes. She even appeared on the show in 2007, where she revealed his real name is Michael Vincent.
Last year, he spoke about his mother's interest in his career, saying: "Your health is your wealth, she'd say. And she still says the same.
"These days, she isn't too bothered about X Factor. But she asks about Daniel O'Donnell. She thinks Nathan Carter is a nice guy and is always asking when Westlife are getting back together."
Meanwhile, in the Woman interview, he said he looks back fondly of his upbringing in Co Mayo.
"I'm the second oldest of nine kids and grew up in a good Catholic family. We didn't have a lot of money, but didn't know any better and we were happy. My parents let me go into the music industry eventually, but they sent me to school and college first," he added.
"But I was no good and I hated it. I didn't get in. I was too crazy and giddy. I think they thought I'd get a normal job but then they knew I was slightly different."
