Linda Martin supports Nicky Byrne but says he's 'not going to win'
Former Eurovision winner Linda Martin is supporting Ireland's entry Nicky Byrne tonight but she believes he has no chance of winning.
Byrne will perform Sunlight in tonight's semi-final but Martin, who is storming the charts again with club mixes of Terminal 3 and Why Me, says sending Nicky was a “good choice”, despite saying he has no hope of winning.
“I know it’s not going to win, but I’m totally supportive of Nicky because it’s a platform for him to try and kick-start his solo career. I know he has an album and everything ready to go, and really I think we should all be supporting anybody that is going to Eurovision to represent our country,” she said.
“It’s a nice song. I like Nicky very much, so I just keep my fingers crossed he will do well.
“He is well known in Europe and will get the young people’s vote. So it comes right down to juries and they can be tricky. If he ticks all the boxes he will get out of the semi-final, so let’s hope he does.”
While Nicky prepares to represent Ireland at the semi-final on Thursday, bookies say it’s unlikely he will even make the final.
However, two previous Eurovision foes have come on side to argue that RTE was correct in picking him.
Linda and Aslan star Billy McGuinness – who were famously at each other’s throats at the Eurosong final two years ago – both told the Sunday World they hope and think the former Westlife star will do well.
“Last year we sent over a girl who was very inexperienced and the Eurovision is all about getting the interviews done, getting your name about, and Nicky knows how to work the press,” explains Billy.
“I know he was a backing singer in Westlife, but that was because Shane and Mark were phenomenal singers. I hope he does well, I really do.”
Paddy Power has odds of 11/4 on Ireland to qualify from the semi-final, and 100/1 on Nicky to win outright.
