Alan Hughes' husband Karl Broderick hospitalised in Austria after Eurovision spill
The Eurovision in Austria has turned out to be not so much fun for one Irish attendee at the week's festivities.
Karl Broderick, husband of TV3 presenter Alan Hughes, has suffered a serious injury while attending the Eurovision in Austria.
Last night saw the first semi-final take place in the Wiener Stadthalle but for Broderick the night of song and celebration ended in hospital.
The song writer fell on some wet stairs and the slip was so serious he was taken to hospital in Vienna with whiplash.
At the semi-final, Serbia, Armenia, Belgium, Greece, Estonia, Hungary, Russia, Albania, Romania and Georgia all made it through to the weekend finale.
Last year's Austrian winner Conchita Wurst opened the show with Rise Like A Phoenix, written by Charlie Mason who will be hoping to strike gold again on Saturday with the Serbian entry.
The evening also saw performances from entrants including Moldova, whose singer and backing dancers sported skimpy latex police outfits, Pertti Kurikan Nimipaivat, a punk rock band from Finland whose members all have learning difficulties, and teenage Danish boyband Anti Social Media.
After performing her ballad with the hopefuls joining her on stage for the final chorus, Conchita made a quick change from a tight-fitting white gown to a navy ensemble and shorter haircut for her presenting duties in the show's green room, where she chatted to acts backstage.
