Robert De Niro likens Donald Trump to Travis Bickle

Robert De Niro has compared Donald Trump to his character Travis Bickle from 'Taxi Driver'.

The Hollywood icon is an outspoken critic of the US Presidential hopeful and during the Sarajevo Film Festival, he explained the similarities he sees between Trump and his character in the Martin Scorsese-directed movie.

During Q&A session at the festival, De Niro was asked about Bickle's mental illness and he developed a link to Trump, saying: "What he has been saying is totally crazy, ridiculous, stuff that shouldn't be even...he is totally nuts."

De Niro was handed the lifetime achievement award for his contribution to film at the festival, which was created as an act of defiance in the face of the city's siege during the Bosnian war.

He said of the honour: "I will treasure this award - my Heart of Sarajevo - because I don't think there is another city in the world that has shown such heart in the face of so much tragedy."

Meanwhile, another Hollywood heavyweight, Jennifer Lawrence, also recently took aim at the US Presidential hopeful.

The Oscar-winning actress said: "If Donald Trump is president of the United States, it will be the end of the world."
