Christian Bale to star in western Hostiles

Christian Bale has signed up to star in 'Hostiles.'

The 42-year-old actor - who has been nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his role in 'The Big Short' - will play a famed army captain in the western movie that is to be directed by Scott Cooper.

Set in 1892, Bale's character agrees to accompany a dying Cheyenne war chief and his family on their journey back home to Indian tribal lands and a story of friendship, courage and overcoming the odds unfolds.

They stumble across a widow who has suffered the loss of her family and the group make a harrowing and perilous journey from an isolated Army outpost in New Mexico to the grasslands of Montana, during which they overcome the hostile Comanche tribes and punishing landscape.

News of the appointment comes following Bale's recovery from a knee injury that rendered him unable to work for the remainder of 2015 after filming on 'The Big Short' had wrapped.

The actor - who is married to Sibi Blazic - then circled the part of Enzo Ferrari in Michael Mann biopic 'Ferrari' but dropped out due to health concerns over the need to gain weight for the role.

'Hostiles' will begin shooting in July.
