Chris Hemsworth replaced his brother Liam as Thor.

The 32-year-old actor has revealed he wasn't initially picked to play the hammer-wielding God in the blockbuster after failing to make the final cut alongside his younger sibling.

Speaking to Vanity Fair magazine, he said: "I had an audition with Ken [Branagh, for 'Thor'] that didn't go very well. I remember walking out thinking, 'Oh well, there goes that opportunity.' Then one day Joss and Drew were reading the trades, and on the front was the final four for 'Thor.'

"And they pointed to Liam and said, 'Hey, is that your brother?' And I said, 'Yeah.' And they said, 'Why the hell aren't you in the mix?' And I said, 'I didn't get a callback.' And they were like, 'This is crazy.' And I was like, 'If one of us gets it, that's cool.' And they were like, 'No way. That should be you.' And when casting opened back up, Joss called Ken and said, 'Give Chris another shot.' "

During his second attempt at landing the film's lead, the hunk, who is known for his bulging biceps and ripped abs, remembers the crew commenting on his muscular physique.

He recalled: "They said, 'Umm, we're looking for a Thor-type, not actual Thor.' "

And despite his tough journey into the movie, Chris has admitted getting the role was a "dream scenario."

Meanwhile, although Liam, 25, didn't quite manage to pick up a role in the superhero flick, the talented star didn't seem too disheartened as he landed the part of Gale Hawthorne in the 'Hunger Games' franchise just months later.
