New bike boost for the Boys in Blue
An Garda Siochana’s ageing and depleted fleet of motorcycles is about to get a welcome boost, Bike Torque can exclusively reveal.
A document has been published on www.etenders.gov.ie inviting tenders for the Gardai in two categories – motorbikes up to 50kw output, and motorcycles from 90kw to 110kw output.
That’s about as much detail as can be gleaned from that website, but a spy tells me that the force is looking for 20 bikes in each category.
The Garda motorcycle fleet has been crying out for investment, with bikes – Yamaha FJRs and Honda Deauvilles – being decommissioned having reached the 120,000km mark.
A number of Honda Deauvilles were purchased in recent years in an attempt to bolster the fleet but with that model being discontinued authorities have to act now and decide what makes and models to go for.
We spied a new-model BMW R 1200 RT in full Garda livery recently and there’s no doubt BMW Motorrad will be interested in the tender.
Likewise, Yamaha will be looking to replace the depleted stock of FJRs on the fleet with the current model.
Honda will look to the VFR 1200 as a perfect fit – we spotted one in Garda livery a couple of years ago – while Triumph could also be interested with the Trophy sports tourer.
Competition for the lower-capacity tender could be wide open as I’m hearing the previous requirement for shaft drive in this tender has been dropped, so everyone from Kawasaki to Suzuki to KTM could be looking to get a piece of the action¬.
