CRISP sandwiches and sunshine have been voted Ireland’s perfect picnic essentials.

So finds a survey by Keogh’s Farms into the country’s favourite picnic habits.
The research, which surveyed almost 1500 Irish males and females, revealed that 60% of respondents have been on at least one picnic in the past 12 months and 95% plan to attend at least one picnic this summer.
Positive weather forecasts this summer could see Ireland’s public parks and sandy beaches filling up with baskets and blankets as 91% of survey respondents indicate that good weather is their perfect picnic essential. Over half (53%) said that going for a picnic was their favourite way to spend a sunny summers day and 45% of those surveyed hope to go on as many picnics as the weather allows in the coming months.
Two thirds (68%) of responses also indicated that good company was paramount to a great picnic experience. Over half (52%) viewed picnics as a family activity while a quarter would most likely go on a picnic with a partner or spouse. Quality time with loved ones was cited by a third (35%) as a motivator for going on a picnic.
Of the Irish celebrities we would most like to have at our perfect picnic, Brian O’Driscoll was voted the ideal male picnic partner (17%) and his wife, actress Amy Huberman, was by far the most desired female companion with 36% of the vote.
Also popular potential picnic dates were the hilarious Brendan O’Carroll (16%) and Lucy Kennedy (12%) and in third place respectively were food and travel gurus Donal Skehan (14%) and Kathryn Thomas (11%).
When it comes to filling out picnic baskets, there was one clear winner with 89% of those surveyed saying that a shareable bag of crisps is the most essential picnic food item and 96% saying that crisps are an integral part of the picnic experience!
Available just in time for peak picnic season, the new Keogh’s Multipack brings together three of their fans most loved flavours in one pack - 2 x Dubliner Cheese and Onion, 2 x Atlantic Sea Salt and Irish Cider Vinegar and 2 x Roast Beef and Irish Stout. Share-size bags and individual packets are also available and perfect for smaller picnics or even for a snack in the car on the way to your perfect picnic destination!
Sandwiches were the second most popular picnic treat (86%) and the humble crisp sandwich beat ham sandwiches (18%) and egg sandwiches (17%) to become the favourite childhood sandwich with 37% of the vote. Fizzy-pop favourite, red lemonade sparked the most memories of childhood picnics for a third of respondents.
Commenting on the survey results, Tom Keogh, Keogh’s Farm, said: “Growing up on a farm and having always had access to delicious, home-grown produce meant that picnics were a regular occurrence in our family. It’s great to see that so many Irish people still feel passionately about the humble picnic and that 95% plan to get out in the fresh air with their loved ones this summer.
“There isn’t much we can do about the weather but for the 96% who said that crisps were an integral part of the picnic experience, we can certainly help! Our new Keogh’s Multipack is perfect for sharing and is designed to easily be carried to any picnic destination and whether it’s up a scenic mountain or in your own back garden, we have share-size and individual crisp bags to cater for any manner of picnic.
