Renault's 4x4 Koleos offers premium quality for a budget price

I had the pleasure of taking Renault’s new Koleos out for an on-and-off road jaunt around Kildare on Monday.

The Koleos is the big daddy of Renault’s hugely popular crossover range, which includes the Captur and Kadjar, and is currently on sale throughout the marque’s 28 Irish dealerships.

Having spent some time poking, prodding and pulling out of the car I can report that there is plenty of space for activities in the back seat, lots of USB and 12-volt charging points and a nice central arm rest with cup holders.

Instead of cramming extra seats into the Koleos, Renault have opted to give everyone in the vehicle more space, meaning you can get full-sized adult human beings into the back, as well as the usual children and hobbits.

The Koleos actually has one of the longest wheelbases in its class at 2.71m with an overall length of 4.67m, giving rear passengers plenty of headroom and 2899mm of knee-space.

The boot is equally spacious at 579 litres, which can be upped to 1,795 litres with the back seats folded down.

There is an additional 35litres of storage around the cabin, including an 11-litre glove box and a seven-litre cubby hole in the centre console.

The engines offered are a 1.6 or 2.0 diesel, producing 130bhp or 177bhp.

The 1.6 starts at €34,490 for the base Dynamique S Nav or €36,790 for the higher spec Signature Nav and neither model is offered with automatic transmission or four wheel drive.

The manual 2.0 4x4 Dynamique S Nav starts at €40,490 with the automatic costing €44,490.

The higher spec Signature Nav comes in at €42,790 and the top of the range Signature Nav dCi 175 Auto X-Tronic is €46,750.

Personally I wouldn’t go near the 1.6, however I can assure you it will be the biggest seller in Ireland.

The 1.6 felt sluggish and damp with only two occupants, so I can’t image what it would be like when full of kids, shopping, dogs and tents.

In my opinion you'd struggle to safely overtake a tractor or cyclist on a back road in the 1.6 when fully loaded.

I find that entry level cars are always lacking so my advice is to save up for one of the 2.0 4x4 models.

The automatic 2.0 diesel is, dare I say it, bordering on being a premium quality luxury vehicle, especially when tricked out with a rake of optional extras, like the BOSE sound system and hands free parking.

I drove the 4x4 model off-road and it was perfectly capable of holding its own up very steep inclines, through rivers and over rocky terrain.

The R-Link2 multimedia system is well equipped, however the Sat Nav system is a little dim-witted when compared to Google Maps and was incapable of using Eir Codes.

The Koleos felt a touch nautical as it rolled in the bends down winding Kildare back roads; however that is to be expected from a car of its size.

The French marque is renowned for its focus on passenger safety and the Koleos is no exception, boasting Renault’s advanced driver assistance systems, such as ‘Advanced Emergency Braking System’ (AEBS), ‘Blind Spot Warning’, ‘Lane Departure Warning’, ‘Traffic Sign Recognition with Over-speed Prevention’ and ‘Hill Start Assist’

A rear parking camera with front and rear parking sensors is also included on all versions as well as an electrochrome rear mirror.

Standard safety features include ABS with ‘Electronic Brake-force Distribution’, ‘Electronic Stability Control’ with traction and understeer control, cruise control, speed limiter, ‘Hill Start Assist’, six airbags, seat belts with load limiters and pretensioners at the front, side impact protection bars and ISOFIX child-seat mounting points on the two outer rear seats.

Renault’s 172 offer through Renault Bank is currently available on All-New Koleos and offers customers the ability to finance their new Koleos at just 3% APR, with a 3 year service plan included until the end of July. This has already proved extremely popular with the public, with 70% of Renault customers availing of the offer.
